Meet Autumn Skoczen, founder of Auts Tipse Treats
, a Broadview Heights company with seven employees. Tipse treats is the first-ever cupcake shot. The company’s patent-pending method puts a full shot of liquor inside each cupcake.
How did you come to be an entrepreneur?
I just always knew I wanted to work for myself and be my own business owner. I had dabbled in a lot of other industries before finding my niche in baking. I am self-taught and really enjoy it.
We have over 85 flavors and are constantly adding more. When customers started asking for cakes and cookies and other baked goods, we started Guilt Luxury Desserts
. We feature couture cakes, gourmet cookies and brownies and cater dessert tables.
What was the highlight for your business in 2013?
We were featured on the Katie Couric Show
on their Mothers of Invention
What is your personal favorite flavor and why?
I love red velvet because we put mini chocolate bits in our recipe. Between that and the smooth cream cheese frosting, it gets me every time!!
Explain your designated driver offer?
We want to encourage responsible cupcake eating, so for orders over 12 or more, we will include a free sober cupcake for the driver.
What is the biggest struggle or hurdle you had to overcome and how did you overcome it?
We have grown super-fast and the growing pains that come with that proved to be a struggle for us. We actually had to tone down our accounts for a while so that we didn't compromise quality. We now understand our mistakes and can move forward to prevent those things from happening again.
How is the new store in doing? Do you still have plans to open a store downtown?
We actually just moved our Parma store to Broadview Heights. We are so excited to have moved and feel we are in a better market now. We are still planning on moving downtown and are currently waiting for a counter offer on the space we want.
What is the most unique order you’ve received?
Someone wanted us to create a zombie wedding cake featuring zombie versions of the bride and groom and their dog and cat as a cake topper.
What was your very first job and what did you learn from it?
I was a retail assistant at Victoria’s Secret. The only thing I learned is that I never wanted to work retail again -- and I haven’t.
Can you share an amazing entrepreneurial experience with our readers?
The greatest thing I have taken from being a business owner is that you can't take it too seriously. It will eat you up alive and spit you out. Just do the right thing -- that's what my mother always says. It's just a cupcake, right? We have encountered some people, both as customers and as employees, who just take it way too seriously. Cake and sugar in general is all about having fun. If you take it too seriously, (any business for that matter) you will ultimately lose happiness in what you are doing. So just relax. Don't let your business run you.
