Doan Brook Watershed Partnership asks the community to Take to the Lake

Doan Brook Watershed Partnership (DBWP), which facilitates conservation and restoration projects within the Doan Brook watershed that flows through Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, and the Larchmere, University Circle, Glenville, and St. Clair Superior neighborhoods before entering into Lake Erie, wants residents to discover the beauty of Lower Shaker Lake in Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights at its annual Take to the Lake event this Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The community gathering will feature adventure, relaxation, entertainment, and one-hour kayak and canoe rentals from Breakaway Excursions.

Seasoned paddlers and first-timers alike can take to the Lake to spend time on the Lower Lake and enjoy the natural surroundings. Cleveland Metroparks’ Outdoor Recreation staff will offer lessons to new paddlers.

There will be a public launch point at the wood chip pile for those who bring their own kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards.

Participants can also enjoy a 10:30 a.m. yoga session along the lake.

Additionally, geologist and archeologist Dr. Roy Larick will host a guided hike around the lake at 1 p.m. Larick will talk about the geology and history of the area.

“Take to the Lake gives participants the opportunity to gain a new perspective on Lower Shaker Lake, Doan Brook, and their place in our watershed community,” says Emily Kao, watershed program manager. “We hope folks will join us for an afternoon of paddling, guided hikes, and yoga along the banks of the historic Lower Shaker Lake.”

Ticket prices vary for the activities and registration is required. Parking is along South Park Boulevard.

Through events like Take to the Lake, DBWP hopes to connect people directly with their watershed and empower them to have a voice in protecting it.
