Have a “Bal”: Ingenuity’s offbeat gala mixes metalwork, music, and masquerade this Saturday

You don’t have to wear a velvet cape and a mask, but certainly no one’s going to stop you.

Ingenuity Cleveland’s annual Bal, this year themed “Rust Belt Renaissance,” is back this Saturday, May 10, for an evening celebration of music, metal, fire, art, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

The 21+ event will take place at IngenuityLabs, 5401 Hamilton Ave., beginning at 7 p.m.

Expect everything from blacksmithing and soldering demos to synthpop and DJ sets, a live poetry reading, and violinists mixing classical with electronic.

There will be plenty of room to dance or explore, just like last year's Bal.There will be plenty of room to dance or explore, just like last year's Bal.Along with the host of demos and performances, there will be hands-on crafting, gaming, and interactive stations like jewelry stamping and mask making, plus visual art, fire effects, and plenty of room to dance or explore.

Cocktails, desserts, and light appetizers will also be served.

Musical performers include Brian Kay, Marottes, Uno Lady, DJ Lolo Knows, Theresa May, and more, alongside a backdrop of visuals lighting up the space courtesy of Kevin Jackson.

Costumes are encouraged—anything from medieval to masquerade to your own take on “renaissance”— but not required. Just skip the heels: IngenuityLabs is still a former industrial building, uneven floors and all.

Proceeds support Ingenuity’s year-round work with Cleveland artists, makers, and entrepreneurs.

Individual tickets and memberships are available on Ingenuity’s website, while costume inspiration can be found on Ingenuity’s Pinterest page.
