Named after the 18983 Cleveland Union Stockyards Company, where
cows, pigs, and sheep were processed for meatpackers—it was once one of the
largest meat processing centers in the country. Originally home to Hungarians
and Czechs, the Laino population in the neighborhood has steadily grown since
the 1980s. Today, the Stockyard is home to almost of 50-50 mix of Latino and
Black residents in a diverse community. The area that once held the actual
stockyards is now a vibrant shopping district, and neighborhood plans call for commercial
and residential development as well as increased access to the nearby Towpath
Trail.
