Holden Forests & Gardens (HF&G) will recognize reaching its five-year goal of planting and caring for 15,000 new trees in Northeast Ohio with a special People for Trees Celebration Week during Arbor Day week, Monday, April 21 through Saturday, April 26.
Holden Forests & Gardens' People for Trees initiative reached its 15,000 tree plantings goal.In February 2021 HF&G launched People for Trees to help build Cleveland’s tree canopy, which declined by 5% from 2011 to 2021. In rural areas, forest land decreased by 300,000 acres and three million live trees were lost between 2013 and 2018. HF&G made the commitment to help the Cleveland Tree Coalition’s goal to Reforest the Forest City and increase the city’s urban tree canopy cover from 18% to 30% by the year 2040.
“This year’s Arbor Day celebration [on Friday, April 25] will be especially meaningful for us as we mark the successful conclusion of our People for Trees campaign,” HF&G president and CEO Ed Moydell said in a statement. “Reaching our goal is an incredible milestone toward our mission to connect people with the wonder, beauty, and value of trees and plants, and to inspire action for healthy communities. Let’s come together to celebrate trees, nature, and the impact we can make when we work as a community."
HF&G celebrates the planting and care of trees every day of the year, but the emphasis is especially present during April when spring is in the air. During Arbor Day week HF&G will have a celebration of all things trees at both the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland and the Cleveland Botanical Garden in University Circle.
Staff and experts will share how HF&G is making an impact through guided tours, free admission days, talks with our People for Trees volunteers, and more.
