Winter Toyland: WRHS’ Cleveland History Center celebrates the season with HollyDays

The Western Reserve Historical Society’s (WRHS) Cleveland History Center welcomes visitors to have a full holiday experience with Winter Toyland, running through Sunday, Jan. 12.

The exhibition features HollyDays, a winter village created by Middleburg Heights resident Dennis Hoert, who began building the miniature village with 12 houses. After 18 years of work, the village, named after Hoert’s wife Holly, now has 350 buildings, includes multiple family tributes and recognizable ties to Northeast Ohio.

HollyDays has nine trains, a depiction of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and an ode to Lake Erie. The one-of-a-kind miniature creation is synchronized to popular holiday music and lights.

While there, enjoy more holiday nostalgia including the miniature buildings from Euclid Beach Park’s Sleepy Hollow Village, a custom Lego display that recreates scenes from “A Christmas Story.”

Nearby, there are materials and additional props from the film—signed by the cast.

Be sure to explore the historic Hay-McKinney Mansion, decked out in both historic and modern-day holiday décor. Period rooms will offer immersive displays about the joys of childhood with music, toys, cooking, and children’s clothing.

All of the Cleveland History Center museum galleries are open and included with museum admission. Current exhibits include “Wild Horses: 60 Years of Ford’s Mustang;” “All Dolled Up: 200 Years of Dolls and Miniatures;” “History in Their Hands: Black Photographers in Cleveland, Ohio, 1968-Present;” and “Solidarity Now! 1968 Poor People’s Campaign.”

Additionally, the Family Interactive Gallery will return to the Cleveland History Center for young audiences to get their hands on history.
